Smith County Low/Medium Risk Jail is the county low- and medium-risk campus operated by the Smith County Sheriff's Office. Leaving the building can mean several very different things. A person may return to the community after bond, credited time served, dismissal, or another valid court or jail authority. The same person may instead be transported to North Jail, a contracted jail in another Texas county, the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, federal custody, or immigration custody. Only the first group is a community release.
A move within Smith County's jail system does not end custody. County budget materials document both local components and the use of contracted overflow beds. A local roster disappearance can therefore reflect an internal or intercounty transfer. Ask for the exit disposition and receiving agency. Those two fields separate release from continued detention.

Begin with the Smith County public portal and the linked Odyssey Public Access system. Save the booking or case number and note the date searched. The live interface can change, and Smith County has not published a fixed retention period for released bookings. A missing result is inconclusive.

- Open the related felony or misdemeanor case and look for a bond, dismissal, judgment, commitment, or release-related order.
- Call the jail information line and ask whether a book-out occurred, whether every hold cleared, and whether another agency received the person.

- Continue with the named receiving system when the record shows transfer.
A court order may authorize release, but the Sheriff's book-out timestamp is better evidence of physical departure.

Request North Jail Records
Texas Government Code Chapter 552, the Texas Public Information Act, governs requests for existing county records, subject to exceptions and redactions. Describe the booking precisely. Include the full name, aliases, date of birth if known, approximate date range, and booking or case number. Ask for existing documents rather than asking staff to prepare a narrative.

Smith County's portal combines jail and judicial search routes, but those records answer different questions. The District Clerk holds felony case records. The County Clerk handles misdemeanor criminal matters. A signed bond order, dismissal, judgment, or commitment can explain the legal authority affecting custody. It does not necessarily establish when release processing ended.
For felony documents, contact the Smith County District Clerk. For misdemeanor documents, use the County Clerk. Match the court case number to the booking number where possible. If one charge was dismissed, inspect every other charge and hold before concluding that the person left custody.

North Jail History and Names
Official Sheriff history dates construction of North Jail to 1989 and the medium-risk expansion to 1994. The same historical account describes 432 spaces. Those dated facts help interpret older custody records but do not guarantee the present layout or available capacity. Newer jail planning material should control for current operations.
Older records may say North Jail, Low Risk Jail, or Low/Medium Risk Jail. Match the booking number and dates before treating those labels as different facilities. The campus remains part of the same Sheriff-run custody system as Central Jail.
North Jail Bond Processing
Smith County publishes a specific personal-bond process through its Pre-Trial Release Department. Staff interview and investigate, a judge decides, approved paperwork is signed, the required payment is made, and then the jail is contacted to begin release. This sequence explains why judicial approval and physical exit can occur at different times.
The stated personal-bond fee is the greater of $20 or three percent of the bond, with cash, money order, or cashier's check accepted. Those terms apply to that local process, not to every type of release. Smith County has also warned that law enforcement does not call demanding payment through Bitcoin, Cash App, or Venmo. Verify payment instructions with the official office before sending funds.
After a North Jail Transfer
If the release disposition names TDCJ, search the TDCJ Online Inmate Search. A current TDCJ result means state custody or a current state sentence is the relevant path, even when the county roster is blank. TDCJ says its public search covers current sentences, so a no-hit does not prove discharge. Historical state custody may require the no-cost inmate-information email or a formal TDCJ records request.
For a federal transfer, use the BOP Inmate Locator. For immigration custody, use the ICE Online Detainee Locator. An ICE detainer expresses intent to assume custody; ask whether pickup actually occurred and at what time. Keep conclusions narrow. “Released from North Jail” can mean only that North Jail custody ended. The disposition and receiving agency determine whether the person entered the community or another secure system.
